ABOUT

In 2009 Brian Russ’s psychedelic folk band, Backwords, faced a particular  dilemma…

They were ready to record their third and hopefully most magnificent album yet – all the songs were there and set to go, but they just didn’t have the budget for the amount of studio time needed to meet the experimental nature of “Quilt,” the soon-to-exist record.

Instead they opted to invest in setting up their own recording studio in the depths of their basement in Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn. Over the course of a few months and through scouring all over NYC, they amassed a pretty nice collection of vintage mics, amps, and recording equipment.  That, plus, well, they all had been hoarding weird toys, sound makers and random instruments for most of their lives to begin with.

Brian began laying down tracks with the band – editing, mixing, and filling in the role of producer and engineer on the spot.  The result is “Quilt,” a 12 song feast of eclectic dreamscapes, atmospheres, moods, and well just plain catchy melodic tunes!

Since finishing “Quilt,” Brian began recording other bands and discovered he had a knack for it.  “I do it the way I cook,” he says.  “Look at other people’s recipes, but just glance at them and use them as a guideline – then make everything else up in the moment – live and randomly – that’s where the uniqueness and magic comes in.”

Campers’ Rule Records is not only a recording studio.  It is a holistic record label.  Depending on the artist, Campers’ Rule likes to be there from the beginning, shaping, assisting and basically digging on every move their artists make.  While bands don’t necessarily have to utilize all of these services – Campers’ Rule will help record and release an album, book a tour, and raise the hype and level of awareness of their artists through specific publicity and media campaigns.

Different packages suit different bands.  Campers’ Rule knows that not every band has a trust fund to fall back on – this is Rock’n’Roll afterall – let’s make it work!
